From the Sicilian Cart to the three-wheeled Piaggio Ape
The carretto siciliano (Sicilian cart) was a means of transporting goods from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. In its decorated version, it was a work of art. Various artisans collaborated in its elaboration: the “ carradore” made the cart and carved the decorations, then there was the smith and the decorator, who added colour, finally the painter, who depicted stories on the sides of the cart: initially, only religious scenes, then scenes from the Carolingian Cycle, the Expedition of the Thousand or the “Cavalleria Rusticana”. The tradition of the “carretto” is still popular even today but with a slight difference – i’s now a “Piaggio Ape”!
